Plastic Free Byron, an association of eight local not-for-profit environmental organisations and community groups, is leading a voluntary plastic bag boycott in Byron Bay, to be in full effect by July 31, 2017.

Plastic Free Byron has received strong community support over the last 9 months with over 100 community members taking part in their projects that provide solutions to Byron Shire residents and businesses. And with support from MP Tamara Smith, Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson, Councilors Michael Lyon and Jeanette Martin, Destination Byron and the Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce, the boycott is set to roll-out over coming month.

This month, volunteer street teams are being trained and equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to help local businesses transition away from plastic bags. Plastic Free Byron will be offering to support accommodation providers and retailers with a range of cloth bags that they can purchase to either lend to their customers and or sell retail.
